Powassan United is part of a wider network of Churches ~
Powassan United Church is a congregation within The United Church of Canada, the largest protestant denomination in our country.
The United Church began in 1925 when it united the Methodist and Congregationalist denominations in Canada, seventy percent of the Presbyterian Churches, some Union churches and Aboriginal congregations. Since that time, the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Bermuda joined in 1930, and the Evangelical Brethren Church in 1968. We continue to be open to dialogue with other denominations and individual congregations from other denominations.
The United Church crest appears on the main page of our website. The symbols on the crest honour the founding denominations of our Church, as well as the essential elements of our faith.
The United Church is an evolving, inclusive denomination. This is reflected in our Statements of Faith. Our first statement was crafted in 1925 when we came into union. Another was written in 1940. In 1968, the New Creed was written, and then revised in 1979 and 1996. Then in 2006, a fourth statement called “A Song of Faith,” was composed.
The New Creed is the most concise of the Statements, reflecting United Church belief:
We are not alone,
we live in God's world.
We believe in God:
who has created and is creating,
who has come in Jesus,
the Word made flesh,
to reconcile and make new,
who works in us and others
by the Spirit.
We trust in God.
We are called to be the Church:
to celebrate God's presence,
to live with respect in Creation,
to love and serve others,
to seek justice and resist evil,
to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,
our judge and our hope.
In life, in death, in life beyond death,
God is with us.
We are not alone.
Thanks be to God.
